Vila Roja Gate
Medieval gate with a 17th-century stone bridge and remains of the old drawbridge. The restored vall is now a space for open-air events and performances.
One of the most striking features of the medieval walls are their access gates. The bridge of the Porta de la Vila Roja, like those of other gates, was originally a wooden drawbridge. In the 17th century, all were replaced by stone bridges. According to Archduke Luís Salvador of Austria, “The Vila Roja Gate is austere and simple; it only shows the remains of the drawbridge over the moat, now replaced by a bridge.” During the 20th century and until 2004, the bridge remained covered by the “vall”. After its restoration, it now features three arches —one small and two larger ones— and preserves the original stone paving. The excavated “vall” has been transformed into a public space for open-air events, concerts and theatre, with the bridge as a scenic backdrop.
